Warning Against Unsecured Remote Monitoring of SCADA Systems

Citing warnings from the Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT) and the FBI, InformationWeek discusses the security vulnerabilities that exist on many SCADA and industrial control systems that are connected to the Internet. It also mentions several readily available tools that can allow hackers to identify such devices. According to the article, the primary reason for unsecured Internet connectivity is remote monitoring:

Control systems need not be Internet-connected, but when they are--typically for remote monitoring purposes--"all too often, remote access has been configured with direct Internet access (no firewall) and/or default or weak user names and passwords," said ICS-CERT.
